2024 6-Month Course: Urban Farm Ecodharma

“Action on behalf of life transforms. Because the relationship between self and the world is reciprocal, it is not a question of first getting enlightened or saved and then acting. As we work to heal the earth, the earth heals us.”

― Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants

Teachers: Lin Wang Gordon, Jon Aaron

The purpose of this course is to nurture climate resilience through learning about meditation practices and Buddhist philosophy, and to cultivate wisdom by directly working with the Earth through volunteering at an urban farm.

As the climate crisis intensifies, life as we’ve come to know it, is in the midst of massive change and upheaval.  While facing impermanence has always been part of the Buddhist teachings, how do we hold this with the particular intensity of climate change? How do we face our anxiety, fear, anger, grief, guilt, and overwhelm with compassion and wisdom, and cultivate a sense of resilience? What are our individual and collective responses?  Where do we fit into what Joanna Macy has called The Great Turning?

Over the six months of this course, we will discover how our embodied Buddhist practices can help us face difficult emotions with compassion and how that impacts our response to the crisis.  We will explore healing and cultivating compassion, wisdom, resilience, equanimity through our meditation practices.  Embracing the climate crisis is as much a spiritual, sacred path as healing from our personal crisis.  We will explore diverse voices who have been thinking through the responses – a diversity that includes gender, race, and age – to provide a wide range of perspectives.   We will also engage in nature-based meditation practices – integrating wisdom from our natural environment into our practices and understanding.

Just as important as embodied practices, we will reconnect to the Earth directly through our hands-on volunteering at an urban farm.  We will partner with The Battery Park Urban Farm and volunteer from the planting season through harvest time (May to October) during our monthly daylong classes.  The Battery Park Urban Farm provides education to 5,000 students each year, and the produce grown is either used during educational programs or donated to hunger relief organizations in NYC such as Coalition for the Homeless.  We will get to know the seasons and elements through connections with soil, water, plants and to learn about regenerative practices.  The urban farm and perennial garden staff will cover topics such as composting, crop planning, seed saving, weeds and pest management, and perennial plants.

To create a mutually supportive program, while we will be getting rich experiential learning and education from the staff, we are there to provide public service and volunteer to assist the staff with what they need throughout the season.  Through direct experiential learning, we will cultivate an intimate connection with the Earth, and understand the intricate web of ecosystems.

The course will include six daylong-retreats, ongoing small groups and regular readings.  This is an in-person course, with the intention to build and nurture community throughout the course.

The 6 course dates are:

  • Sat. 5/18
  • Sat. 6/22
  • Sat. 7/20
  • Sat. 8/10
  • Sat. 9/21
  • Sat. 10/19

The daylong will be from 10am-4pm for each class.  The structure of the day will likely be the following but subject to change depending on the actual conditions of the urban farm.

  • 10 – 12pm – Group meet and volunteering
  • 12 – 1pm – Group lunch and community building
  • 1 – 4pm – Nature meditation and ecodharma practices

Due to the limited volunteering space at the urban farm, this course has a maximum number of 18 participants.  If you sign up for this course, please make sure that you can commit to at least 5 out of 6 meeting dates, otherwise, please leave the space for others to sign up.

We welcome participants with all levels of physical abilities, however, please know that most of the volunteering roles will require working on the soil, watering, weeding, and so forth.  There would be only a couple of roles that may be designed for physical limitations.

Location:

The Battery Park Urban Farm

The Battery Park will be under construction in 2024 to build climate resilience along its waterfront.  Depending on the actual condition of the month, we may hold the afternoon classes at The Governors’ Island.

The outdoor classes will take place regardless of weather conditions unless it is dangerous weather.  It will be our practice to work with a wide variety of conditions.

2023 5-Month Course: Soulcentric Midlife (In-Person, 8/12 – 12/2)

Are you in your 40s and 50s and thinking about the second half of your life? Every life stage brings its own gifts.  Each life stage has its own purpose in our development as a whole being.  In every season of our life, there are changes and growth, letting go and rebirth.  Midlife could bring us menopause, greying hair, childcare, eldercare, an empty nest, loss of loved ones, second careers, and relationship changes..but we also have more life experiences and skills than we had in our younger years.  Perhaps we also have more time and resources to find joy and explore our passions.  While our culture likes to associate this time in our life with turmoil and crisis, it could also be a great time for inner growth, clarity, and purpose.

In this 5-month course, we will use inquiries, experiential exercises, and meditation practice to explore our underlying emotions around midlife issues.  What are our fears, doubts, agitation, hopes, and dreams?  How do we make peace with the life we have led so far? How do we live a fulfilling life with the time we have left?  As we have learned from our life experiences so far, have we started to live in accordance with our inner values and deepest desires? How do we let go of our former selves and keep evolving?  This class is for exploring questions rather than having answers.   It is based on Buddhist philosophy to help us transform our mind in approaching these inquiries.  It is highly interactive and experiential in nature – we will spend much time in group work and less time in formal sitting practice.  Central to this course is building a community among people in the midlife stage.

This is an in-person course and will meet monthly on a Saturday for half a day.  We will meditate, journal, form buddy groups, and build community through sharing, dialogues, and group work.

The meeting dates of the course are:

Sat. 8/12/2023 – 2pm – 5pm

Sat. 9/23/2023 – 2pm – 5pm

Sat. 10/21/2023 – 2pm – 5pm

Sat. 11/18/2023 – 2pm – 5pm

Sat. 12/2/2023 – 2pm – 5pm

The course will be offered through New York Insight Meditation Center.

Sunset Meditative Walk – Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn Bridge Park – Friday, 9/22

Date: Friday, 9/22/2023

Time: 6-8pm ET

Location: Meet at 5:45pm at the head of the Brooklyn Bridge on the Manhattan side

We often think of meditation as an indoor formal sitting practice, when we can meditate anywhere, anytime, on anything. For this fall evening, explore meditating outdoors by walking through the Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn Bridge Park during sunset. We will discover how we can connect to ourselves and the larger community around us through awareness. We will experience the beauty of a sunset of a cityscape while deeply connecting to our body and mind, and appreciating the natural world and interconnection to humanity, all in the midst of a busy city life.

We will begin a meditative walk from the head of the Brooklyn Bridge from the Manhattan side, then walk through the Brooklyn Bridge to the Brooklyn Bridge Park, and we will do a few nature practices in the park. Throughout the walk, we will practice open awareness meditation, metta, five elements, etc.

Both beginners and experienced meditators are welcome. Hope to see you there!

2023 5-Month Course: Soulcentric Midlife (In-Person, 2/25 – 6/3)

Are you in your 40s and 50s and thinking about the second half of your life? Every life stage brings its own gifts.  Each life stage has its own purpose in our development as a whole being.  If our life were the four seasons, 40s/50s could be the early fall.  In every season of our life, there are changes and growth.  Midlife could bring us menopause, greying hair, childcare, eldercare, an empty nest, loss of loved ones, second career, but we also have more life experiences than we had in our young adult years.  While our culture likes to associate this time in our life with turmoil and crisis, it could also be a great time for inner growth, clarity, and purpose.

We will explore many areas of our lives – health, career, money, family, relationship, kids/no kids – what are the gifts of this lifestage? How do we feel about each of these areas in our life at this point?  How do we make peace with the life we have led so far? How do we live a fulfilling life with the time we have left?  As we have learned from our life experiences so far, have we started to live in accordance to our inner values and deepest desires? What rituals you may start on your own?  This class is for exploring questions rather than having answers.  It is loosely influenced by Bill Plotkin’s book “Nature and the Human Soul” and other sources.

This is 5-month in-person course and will meet monthly on a Saturday afternoon.  We will meditate, journal, form buddy groups, and build community through sharing and dialogues.

2022 Yearlong Course: Embracing Climate Crisis as a Spiritual Path

“Action on behalf of life transforms. Because the relationship between self and the world is reciprocal, it is not a question of first getting enlightened or saved and then acting. As we work to heal the earth, the earth heals us.”

― Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants

Teachers: Jon Aaron, Lin Wang Gordon

As the climate crisis intensifies, society and life on Earth are changing in ways we have never imagined before.  Life as we’ve come to know it, is in the midst of massive change and upheaval as a result of many interrelated causes.  How do we hold this? How do we face our anxiety, fear, anger, grief, guilt, and overwhelm with compassion and wisdom, and cultivate a sense of resilience? What are our individual and collective responses to respond to the climate crisis?  Where do we fit into what Joanna Macy has called The Great Turning?  How do we cultivate a sense of agency and empowerment?

Over the months of this course we will discover how our embodied Buddhist practice can help us face difficult emotions with compassion and how that impacts our response to the crisis.  We will explore healing and cultivating compassion, wisdom, resilience, equanimity through our practices. Embracing the climate crisis is as much a spiritual, sacred path as healing from our personal crisis.  We will explore diverse voices who have been working on the responses – diversity that includes gender, race, and age – to provide a wide range of perspectives.   We will also explore nature-based practices – integrating wisdom from our natural environment into our practices and understanding.

The course will include four daylong-retreats, six half-day retreats, ongoing small groups and regular readings.  This is an in-person course, with the intention to build and nurture community throughout the course.  The first three classes will be held indoors during the winter months, and for the rest of the classes we will meet outdoors in parks or various natural environments throughout NYC.  Each participant will be expected to take on some project related to this work – including meditating outdoors throughout the year, and a local volunteering project of choice related to the environment.  Core reading will include:

  1. A Time to Stand Up by Thanissara;
  2. Active Hope by Joanna Macy;
  3. All We Can Save by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Katharine Wilkinson
  4. Other additional resources

The outdoor classes will be taking place regardless of weather conditions, unless it’s dangerous weather.  It will be our practice to work with a wide variety of conditions.

The meeting dates of the course are:

Sun. 1/30 – 10am – 5pm

Sun. 2/27 – 1-5pm

Sun. 3/20 – 1-5pm

Sun. 4/24 – 10am – 5pm
